ACADEMIC AND ATHLETIC
BALANCE

Extra-curricular athletics must be viewed as a supportive activity to the primary mission of any educational institution. The primary mission of any educational institution must be the academic and personal development of its students. At Turner High School, the integrity of the academic mission can
never be compromised. Molding and increasing the intellectual capacity of our students is vital to personal student success. In addition to aiding in cognitive functioning, extra-curricular athletics provide opportunities for extended character development through structured athletic competition.

Comprehensive, statewide academic performance studies of high school student-athletes in North Carolina over a
three-year period found significant differences between athletes and non-athletes. Five criteria were used including grade point average, attendance rate, discipline referrals, dropout rate and graduation rate, for the 2000-2003 academic years. Athletes, compared to non-athletes, scored significantly higher in all academic and attendance categories and lower in discipline referrals. These published results will be at the cornerstone of our recruiting pitches to prospective athletes’ families.

Throughout the year, we will remind players about the importance of academics and will attempt to tie in any football and/or strength and conditioning rewards with academic standards. This Academics First agenda will be enforced by every member of our coaching staff.

ACADEMIC PLAN OF ACTION

Position Coaches will monitor their position players’ academic progress Staff will schedule individual meetings every week with players to discuss any issues.

    Academic Accountability -  any
players who are struggling (D or F), will be required to show progress toward improving their poor grade.  They will meet with their position coach to plan out the next week’s assignments, tests, and/or projects.  If appropriate and/or necessary, players will not be permitted to play in games until they display adequate academic progress.  No player who has an F on his grade card will ever be permitted to play in a Turner High School football game at any level until that grade has been raised above failing.
Staff will meet with Head Coach on Mondays for updates on all student–athlete's academic issues.
Peer Teaming – on some occasions, a strong academic student may be involved with the coach to help another student.  We are a family, when one of us is struggling, we will be there to pick each other up.

“When you are 40 years old, it will not matter how many yards you’ve gained or tackles you’ve made. What will matter is what you can provide for yourself, your family, and your community as a productive member of society.”
